Brooke-Walder Gallery is pleased to present English Garden, a collection of still life paintings, sculptures, and photographs exploring the English garden.
The tradition of still-life flower painting, although indiscriminate, beautiful renderings of the transient nature of flowers and life, has always told us something about the times they were created. The great 17th-century Dutch still-life commented on a burgeoning global trade, bringing together objects including shells, fruit, spices, and vases, that were only available from the Dutch wealth during the golden age. This exhibition comments on our relationship to our world now, through the floral still life. The artists in this exhibition have taken this traditional form of picture making, and all subvert the methods of still-life to provide a commentary on our relationship to the English Garden today. English Garden combines painting, sculpture, and photography created in England over the last 20 years.
