The British Art Fair: Saatchi Gallery, London

28 September - 1 October 2023
Stand 5

We at Brooke-Walder Fine Art were pleased to participate in the British Art Fair, located at the Saatchi Gallery in London. Taking place between the 28th of September and the 1st of October, the fair provided us an ideal opportunity to showcase some of our current Modern British Art holdings, including works by David Hockney, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Lilian Holt, Keith Vaughan, Leon Kossoff, and others. As it was our first time presenting at this fair, we were delighted by the reception the stand received and were glad to see such thorough engagement with our artworks.

A highlight of our time at the British Art Fair was the sale of Square at Ostend, Evening by Glyn Philpot (1914-89). This piece, which was swept up early on the preview day, was a large canvas painted during Philpot’s time in Belgium in 1936. The painting had previously been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London, 1986. Other works we sold included Abstract by James Stroudley, which garnered much attention from visitors and is an exceptional example of Stroudley’s study of the cubist movement; Study of a Hooded Women by Gaudier-Brzeska; Self Portrait with Skeletons by Jane Natchigal; and London River Thames Docks by Lillian Holt.

We also took the opportunity to present recent sculptural works by David Jacobson. The sculptures, created between 2021-23, were all transported specifically for the fair from the artist’s studio in Italy. They included various sizes and materials and were fantastic examples of Jacobson’s interest in form and shape. Jacobson joined us at the booth on multiple days, where he gave first-hand accounts of his artworks to visitors. This also provided a great opportunity to introduce an upcoming exhibition of Jacobson’s new body of work The Last Drop of Water Time Bombs in November.

We are thrilled to welcome a new audience after the successful run at the British Art Fair, as well as our continued relationships, many of whom came along in support. We’d like to thank everyone for making this last weekend the success it was, as well as all those who worked towards making the British Art Fair run smoothly. We look forward to seeing you at future events! — OBW
